Depicted through unpublished personal photographs, magazine and newspaper clippings, fashion editorials and advertising campaigns, interspersed with Gordon's song lyrics, art works, private objects and ephemera, theoretical art writings and even a handful of her favourite recipes.

When America Stopped Being Great by Nick Bryant

When America Stopped Being Great Bryant.jpg

The presidency of Donald Trump is commonly seen as an historical accident. In When America Stopped Being Great, Nick Bryant argues that by 2016 it had become almost historically inescapable. In this highly personal account, drawing on decades of covering Washington for the BBC, Bryant shows how the billionaire capitalised on the mistakes of his five predecessors, Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and how also he became a beneficiary of a broken politics, an iniquitous economy, an ailing media, a facile culture, disruptive new technology and the creation of a modern-day presidency that elevated showmanship over statesmanship. Not only are we starting to see the emergence of a post-American world, Bryant fears we are seeing the emergence of a post-American America.

Italian Life (A Modern Fable of Loyalty and Betrayal)

9781787302143.jpg

The long-awaited new book on 'how Italy really works' from the bestselling writer on Italian culture.

Forty years ago, Tim Parks made the bel paese his home. Italian Life is his reckoning with his adopted country, an attempt to get to the core of it, to make sense of it, to fold others' stories in with his own experience - now that he is, in his own words, 'to some degree Italian' himself.

The result is an arresting, on-the-ground account of 21st century Italy told through the eyes of a rich cast of characters, among them students from poverty-stricken Basilicata trying to start new lives in the wealthy gloom of Milan, a priest, a poet, a young professor from Padua, and an Englishman who refuses to toe the line.

At the book's centre is a story of corruption and power. But it is also a celebration of culture and history, fact and fable, sacred and secular, ancient and modern- a thought-provoking, surprising, entertaining and even definitive account of how Italy actually happens.

Born in Manchester, Tim Parks grew up in London and studied at Cambridge and Harvard. He lives in Milan.

He is the acclaimed author of novels, non-fiction and essays, including EuropaIn ExtremisA Season with VeronaTeach Us to Sit Still and Italian Ways. He has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize, won the Somerset Maugham Award, the Betty Trask Prize, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, the John Florio Prize and the Italo Calvino Prize.

Florence is renowned for its Renaissance art, yet this celebrated city is more than just a tourist hub for galleries filled with gilt-framed paintings. Go beyond the facade of the palazzi and instead take a turn down the cobblestone side streets to discover vintage stores housing designer names, restaurants offering farm-to-table dishes and boutique hotels in 16th-century buildings.
Lost in Florence is the culmination of the author's popular blog by the same name and offers a comprehensive guide to the very best places to eat, drink, shop and explore in this magical Italian city. A series of itineraries mean you can get the most out of your visit, whether you have only a day or two or more, and daytrips to nearby places like Siena, Cinque Terre and the Chianti wine region are also included. Italians pride themselves on a quality of life – la dolce vita – and with this beautifully designed guidebook, you will discover those unique travel experiences beyond the tourist haunts.

Nardia Plumridge is an Australian freelance travel and lifestyle writer based in Italy. She regularly contributes to print and online publications in the UK, US and Australia with her work featured in The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, among others. She is also the Tuscan expert for Expedia and Olive magazine in the UK. Nardia’s love affair with Florence began as a teenage girl when she first visited the city aged 15. Since then, she has returned to Tuscany scores of times before relocating in 2012 and starting her website Lost in Florence (www.lostinflorence.it). As a journalist, she combines her passion for the city and its people with the pursuit of 'la dolce vita'.
